Collaborative Responsibilities for this unit:
1. Class Notes: John, Audrey, Emily, Jenny
2. Mapping Macondo: This novel recounts the foundation and development of a village. At the end of each chapter I would like to see a quick sketch of the village. Whether you choose to sketch this on the board when you come in to class, or you prefer to do it digitally and send the file up to the conference so that you can simply update it periodically. It´s up to you.(Oliver, Chris, Matti) 3. Time: Throughout the novel we are going to see many, many flashbacks, flashforwards etc. etc. I have put a document on the conference where I´m hoping that you can straighten out the looping, repeating timeline of the novel´s action. Try to account for as many of the novel´s anecdotes etc. as possible. (Charlie, Corey, Mel) 4. References to solitude: There is a document on the conference that you can edit. Please keep an updated list of quotes in which there is a reference made to solitude. ( Lyndon, Ruth, Campbell, Christina)

Discussion questions for Chapter 2 of One Hundred Years...

1. Some critics look at Macondo as a microcosm for Latin America. If this is the case, what are the events, fears, etc. that lead to the foundation of Macondo? What might this have in common with the foundation of the New World?
2. Consider Freud´s postulations on dreams, the subconscious and man's libido.
3. What are we to make of the ways in which GGM makes use of the days of the week and the months of the year. He is certain to include this information whenever something important happens, and sometimes for no apparent reason at all. Why?
4. José Arcadio (the son) learns why men are afraid of death on page 28. Why are men afraid of death, or rather, what does he learn?
5. What about the curse words? They are few and far between, but well placed. How does GGM use these interjections?
6. The flying carpet is a game-changer? How does it shape the way that we view the setting of the novel?
7. Consider the causes and effects of Ursula´s departure and return.
